Grade 3Math

FractionsShow the size of equal parts with fractions

When you split 1 m into parts of the same length, the length of one part is shown with a fraction. A fraction can also be shown as how many of a base fraction it is.

The narration and the pictures are in Japanese. You can hear the same words that are used in class at a Japanese school.

Let's try

Write the math sentence in your notebook first, then open the answer.

  1. 1Which fraction with denominator 4 shows the length of 2 of the 1/4 m parts?

    Hint

The denominator shows how many parts the whole was split into, and the numerator shows how many of those parts there are.

    Answer

It is 2/4 m. It is 2 of the 4 equal parts, so the denominator is 4 and the numerator is 2.

  2. 2What is the bottom number of a fraction called?

    Hint

    It starts with "de."

    Answer

The denominator. It shows how many parts the whole was split into.

For parents and guardians

  • The names of lessons and the order of topics differ slightly between textbooks. This page follows the content of Japan's national curriculum guidelines (the Course of Study).
  • Folding a real paper tape to split it into equal lengths helps your child get a feel for the idea that "one of 4 equal parts" is 1/4.
  • In 3rd grade, it is important to think of a fraction as "how many unit fractions" it is. That 1/2 and 2/4 are the same size is learned in a later grade.
