Let's try

Write the math sentence in your notebook first, then open the answer.

  1. 1If you share 15 blocks equally on 5 plates, how many go on each plate? Write the math sentence too.

    Hint

Try handing them out to the 5 plates one at a time, in turn. It is easier to see if you try with marbles.

    Answer

    The math sentence is 15 ÷ 5 = 3, and the answer is 3 on each plate. You can check with 3 × 5 = 15.

  2. 2If you put 18 blocks on plates, 9 on each, how many plates can you fill? Write the math sentence too.

    Hint

Which fact in the 9 times table has the answer 18?

    Answer

    The math sentence is 18 ÷ 9 = 2, and the answer is 2 plates. You can check with 9 × 2 = 18.

For parents and guardians

  • The names of lessons and the order of topics differ slightly between textbooks. This page follows the content of Japan's national curriculum guidelines (the Course of Study).
  • Division includes finding "how many for one person" and finding "how many people can get a share," and both can be shown with a division math sentence. When sharing snacks, try thinking together about which case it is.
  • The answer to a division can be checked with the multiplication times tables. Saying "Let's go back with multiplication" when your child finds an answer helps build the habit of checking calculations.
